How to work with Forwarders in cPanel
Now that you have logged into your cPanel account and created your email address, this tutorial will help you work with Forwarders for your email account i.e. email@yourdomainname.com and your domain i.e. domainname.com. So, let’s get started;
Setup a Forwarder
- Log into your cPanel account and scroll down to Mail section.
- Click the Forwarders button.
- Select the appropriate domain from the managing drop-down menu.
- Click Add Forwarder button to create a new Forwarder.
- Enter the username of the email address that you want to forward email from i.e. email in this case in the Address to Forward field.
- Select the correct domain from the drop-down menu in Domain field i.e. yourdomainname.com in this case.
- In Destination select where do you want the emails to forward to. To see all five options, click the Advanced Options.
- In the Forward to Email Address, you can specify an email account where you want your mails to forward to e.g. forward@seconddomain.com.
- Discard and send an error to the sender (at STMP time) option allows you to discard all incoming emails while enabling you to send an automated error message to the sender. Enter your failure/error message in the text field.
- Forward to a system account will forward your incoming emails at email@yourdomainname.com to a system account.
- Pipe to a program option will forward incoming mails to a script e.g. a script that sends your emails to a database. Enter the correct path relative to your home directory to point to the script/program in the text field.
- Discard (Not Recommended) will just discard all incoming mails.
- Add Forwarder button to add the Forwarder for your email account.
Trace a Forwarder
- Log into your cPanel account and scroll down to Mail section.
- Click the Forwarders button.
- Click the Trace link in the Actions columns next to the email account Forwarder that you want to Trace as shown in Fig. 2.
- You can check the path that forwarded email messages will take as shown in Fig. 3.
- The legends as shown in Fig. 4 indicate where the forwarded email messages are going.
- A Red Exclamation Point icon indicates that the forwarded email messages will meet an error.
- The File Page icon means that the forwarded email messages will be filtered into a file.
- If the forwarded messages are delivered to another server, the scenario is depicted by the Green Globe icon.
- The Folder icon indicates that the messages will be delivered to a local email address on the same server.
- If multiple Green Globe icons are observed, it shows the order in which the system will try to deliver the incoming mails.
Delete a Forwarder
- Log into your cPanel account and scroll down to Mail section.
- Click the Forwarders button.
- Click the Delete option under Actions columns next to the email account Forwarder that you want to delete.
- Confirm the action to deleted a Forwarder.
Setup/Delete a Domain Forwarder
- Log into your cPanel account and scroll down to Mail section.
- Click the Forwarders button.
- Click the Add Domain Forwarder button.
- Select the domain from the drop-down list in the Domain section.
- In the text field next to “to”, enter the domain name e.g. anotherdomain.com where you wish to forward the messages to.
- Click the Add Domain Forwarder button.
- To delete a Domain Forwarder, just click the delete option in the Delete column next to the Domain Forwarder that you want to delete.
